Words to O Tannenbaum in English and German

The popular Christmas carol O Tannenbaum was written in Germany in the mid-1500s. The original folk song has been rewritten many times over the centuries. The songs long history is not very detailed, but it is interesting. Its also fascinating to see how one modern German version literally translates into English. Its not quite what youre probably familiar with. The History of O Tannenbaum A Tannenbaum  is a fir tree  (die Tanne) or Christmas tree (der Weihnachtsbaum). Although most Christmas trees today are spruce (Fichten) rather than Tannen, the qualities of the evergreen have inspired musicians to write several Tannenbaum songs in German over the years. The first known Tannenbaum song lyrics date to 1550. A similar 1615 song by Melchior Franck (1579 to 1639) goes: â€Å"Ach TannebaumAch Tannebaumdu bist ein edler Zweig!Du grà ¼nest uns den Winter, die lieben Sommerzeit.† Roughly translated, it means, Oh pine tree, oh pine tree, youre a noble twig! You greet us in the winter, the dear summer time. In the 1800s, the German preacher and collector of folk music, Joachim Zarnack (1777 to 1827) wrote his own song inspired by the folk song. His version used the true leaves of the tree as a contrast to his sad tune  about an unfaithful (or untrue) lover. The best-known version of a Tannenbaum song was penned in 1824 by Ernst Gebhard Salomon Anschà ¼tz (1780 to 1861). He was  a well-known  organist, teacher,  poet, and composer from  Leipzig, Germany. His song doesnt specifically refer to a Christmas tree that is decorated for the holiday with ornaments and a star. Instead, it sings of the green fir tree, as more of a symbol of the season. Anschà ¼tz left the reference to a true tree in his song, and that adjective dates back to the faithless lover Zarnack sung about. Today, the old song is a popular Christmas carol that is sung far beyond Germany. Its common to hear it sung in the United States, even among people who dont speak German. The Lyrics and Translation The English version here is a literal translation—not the traditional English lyrics for the song—for learning purposes. There are at least a dozen other versions  of this carol. For example, a number of modern versions of this song changed treu (true) to  gruen  (green). The traditional melody of â€Å"O Tannenbaum† has also found use in non-Christmas songs. Four U.S. states (Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, and New Jersey) have borrowed the melody for their state song. The Government Should Fund Embryonic Stem Cell Research Essay

Millions of people die every year from diseases and accidents; the nightly news is filled with reports about the devastating effects of cancer, horrific accidents, and disasters that leave people disfigured or paralyzed. Embryonic stem cell research is a part of biomedical science and has the potential to ease the suffering of sick people by curing diseases and defects, creating organs and tissue for patients needing transplants or skin grafts, regenerating axons in spinal cord injuries, and creating new treatments, drugs, and immunizations. However, America’s government does not support this research to an extent that would make a difference in medicine; only a few stem cell lines are authorized, and federal funding is minimal. The†¦show more content†¦Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are pluripotent and are obtained from the inner mass of a 4-5 day old human blastocyst that consists of approximately 100 cells (â€Å"Stem cell research,† 2009). These cells can be used to create stem cell lines that can grow indefinitely under optimal conditions (â€Å"Stem cells and diseases,† 2011). Embryonic stem cells can be obtained from existing stem cell lines (any group of cells that came from the same original embryo), aborted or miscarried embryos, unused in vitro fertilized embryos, and cloned embryos created from somatic cell nuclear transfer (the nucleus from an unfertilized egg is removed and replaced with a nucleus from an adult stem cell). This technique would be used for therapeutic cloning, which could grow organs or skin grafts for patients. However, the only research that is federally funded are a few embryonic stem cell lines created from unused embryos at in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics before 2001 (Dunn, 2005; â€Å"Embryonic fetal research laws,† 2008; Therapeutic cloning, 2009). Leonardo da Vinci documentary Essay Example For Students

Leonardo da Vinci documentary Essay In the documentary, Leonardo dad Vinci is a Renaissance Man because he excelled in a wide variety of activities. He was a painter, scientist, architect, engineer, and many more. He valued natures mysteries in awe. He had the power of intellect he could be the master of anything he turned his mind to. He was handsome and strong and these qualities were also seen through his painting. Dad Vinci was an illegitimate child and they were a poor family. Illegitimacy hindered him from certain things like inheriting property, taking his fathers name, certain professions guilds. He had no real place he was kept away from people of a different social status. He was accused of sodomys. He wasnt chosen as one of the artists to paint the Sistine Chapel in Rome. These challenges ignited a passion in his heart to push beyond all obstacles and expectations in order to break free from the illegitimacy and low social class. Since dad Vinci wanted to break free from illegitimacy and low social class, he had to have a code of survival and success. He knew that his hope rests in his talent; therefore, he had to excel in it. So when they moved to Florence, his father sent him to Andrea De Overreach, a Florentine artist, who gave dad Vinci the experience needed to get into a guild. During these times were when dad Vinci realized the powerful connection between art and power. The Medici were a big influence as the powerful patrons of the arts. Dad Vinci learned all he can in order to excel more. As reflected in his notebooks, A painter must develop all skills and doing one thing well, isnt enough; a person should excel in different activities. In Overreachs workshop, he not only learned to paint but he also learned engineering mechanical training, painting on ceramic, and sculpture in bronze or marble. He loved to observe nature and he believed that only through experimentation can we truly know anything. He always presented himself in a manner which showed him as handsome strong and therefore immediately likeable. He always pushed himself beyond expectations if something hinders him from his goal, he finds another way to achieve it. His code as to never be limited by what has been done before or what others might think. He pushed himself to the limits with his imaginative mind and endless stream of ideas. It was important that he followed his code of survival and success so that he could break free from illegitimacy be a successful person in the time of Renaissance. If he followed his code, he would become one of the most valued people at that time because it was a period when art was closely related to power. His code pushed him to tackle more ideas, like his cannons, catapults, ladders. He had the amazing ability to capture motion emotion in his paintings and drawings which put him above others. As previously stated, he had the ability of being the master of anything he turned his mind to, which is a result of him following his code. He knew that painting was the in road to patronage life but he unfortunately left it behind to pursue other things that interested him more such as engineering nature. If I were to pick one of dad Vines masterpieces, I would pick The Lady with the Ermine. I think his painting exemplifies true Renaissance, humanism Excellence because for me, dad Vinci was able to capture even the smallest details of the lady. He was able to paint the wrinkles in her hand, her nails, and the tendon in her hand. He was also able to accurately paint her even if she appears to be looking somewhere distant or not directly at him. He was able to capture her, as well as the ermines, emotion thoughts and put it to paper. For me, his ability to do that really showed how the Renaissance time was a period of great art and excellence.

Anarchy Essays - Political Philosophy, Politics, Anti-fascism

Anarchy Essays - Political Philosophy, Politics, Anti-fascism Anarchy Anarchy, coming from the greek term meaning "without government", is the political theory that society does not need a government to run the country or any governmental fundings (although robbing them of what they robbed us wouldn't hurt). Many people believe that anarchy is a horrible and impossible way of living, stating that anarchism would leave us vulnerable to criminals and terrorists. This may be because of the terroristic methods that anarchists have taken to reach their ultimate goal. The terroristic anarchism movement came under the leadership of Mikhail Bakunin in the 1800's, and have continued with most individual anarchists and anarchist groups. I admit, there are some vulnerabilities to anarchism, yet nothing that couldn't be avoided by taking the nessecary precautions. Religion, although in most cases wouldn't matter, is still a major factor in a society of anarchy. If a community is filled with religous people where the religion is full of good intentions and peace, the community will hold up considerably well. If a community is filled with religous people following a religion with bad intentions and hate, it may turn out two ways under the circumstances. Everyone could intentionally harm eachother due to the bad intentions, or everyone within the community could be peaceful to eachother due to the fact they all follow the same religion. There are many different ways of anarchism. It could be that the country is seperated into towns purely helping out the town and occasionally interacting with other neighboring towns, or that it is like it is today. Other types of governmental systems are not as free as anarchism. The idea of democracy is relatively swell, but governments today form and mold it to their own likings. For instance, in a certain state, a shock rock band known today as Marilyn Manson is prohibited from holding a concert there, which the law itself should be prohibited due to the constitution and its right of "Free Speech". Also, even though the American government today is supposedly not allowed to have influence upon religions, there are at least three cases in which they refer to God (Christian), the Pledge of Allegiance, dollar bill and coin currency, and the swearing of truth in courts of law. In the pledge of allegiance, I quote, "One nation, under God", in the dollar bill and coinage, I quote, "In God we trust", and in the swearing of the truth, I quote (in most cases), "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you God?" These are simply examples of the power governments have and often abuse. Communism runs bussinesses like a clock. No one is allowed to make more money than their equal co-workers even if their co-workers are slacking off while you are working to your limit. Monarchy includes kings, queens, and czars who have limited powers set by a legislative group. Dictatorship is like monarchy but with unlimited powers for the ruler. Now, with any type of government, things will change. Now matter how it is at one point, the government will form itself into another type of government with different rules and laws. History No one really knows where the theory of anarchy originates, nor it's international symbol, the circled "A", although there have been reports of an anarchist militia member in the Spanish Civil War with a clearly inscribed circled A on the back of his helmet. Anarchism dates back long ago with legends of countries of a "golden age" which preceded goverenments, and has also appeared among early Christian groups. Pierre Joseph Proudhon, a frenchman also known known as "The Father of Anarchism", started the first anarchism mass movement, urging the voluntary cooperation of men without any regulation or government. As time passed, the power of anarchism has declined, yet played a role in the Spanish Civil War, and recently entered Albania. In Albania, the government corrupted completely due to rebel attacks. It is now in complete ruins with theives and murderers running the streets. In one area, a few people tried to open a bombshell for it's gunpowder, used unwise methods and the bomb exploded, as well as the bombs around it. Obviously, this is not a country with willing, voluntary people working to restore order without government.

International marketing plan guide Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

International marketing plan guide - Essay Example However, understanding of the market conditions in Qatar for efficient service delivery and success of the marketing channels for use by the university is mandatory. This study aims at analyzing the international pricing that will fit the Qatar market to be adopted by Marywood University for success in accessing international students from Qatar. The different aspects of price will be used to analyze the qualities of the Qatar market to provide insight to effective pricing mechanism for the Qatar market. The high demand in Qatar results in low price sensitivity for established university institutions. However, for a new entrant in the market the prices have to conform to the levels of pricing to the Qatar market, owing to sensitivity to new universities in the region and the need for quality education (Ibp, 209). After some time, the prices can be adjusted upwards when Marywood University has established a high acceptance in Qatar and has convinced the public and the regulatory authorities of the quality of its programs both graduate and undergraduate. There are many substitutes for education in Qatar from both international and local universities and the pricing have to reflect the rates offered by the competition, if not better to allow for augmented market share (Ibp, 203). The most notable competition in Qatar is Qatar University offering both graduate and undergraduate programs. Therefore, using the prices offered at Qatar University, Marywood University should develop prices to meet these needs at a region of QAR 176,191. A high and continuously increasing demand for university education exists in Qatar owing to the few Qataris having attained high education levels to allow them to access jobs requiring high skills and understanding (Abougomaah, 67). There has been an increased need by the Qatar government to reverse the use of highly skilled expatriates resulting in high demand for education in Qatar. The current and expected future demand for

Principles based accounting as an accounting method which is used as a Essay

Principles based accounting as an accounting method which is used as a conceptual basis by accountants - Essay Example This system follows principles. The term â€Å"principles† can be used simply to refer to general rules, or also to suggest that these rules are implicitly higher in the implicit or explicit hierarchy of norms than more detailed rules: they express the fundamental obligations that all should observe (Black et al, 2007). Some of the rules set out are mandatory to follow but many other rules are used as a mere guidance and are not applicable to every situation. For instance, many countries have adopted the International Financial Reporting Standards governed by the IASB. According to Securities and Exchange Commission of US, â€Å"†¦the optimal principles-based accounting standard involves a concise statement of substantive accounting principle where the accounting objective has been incorporated as an integral part of the standard and where few, if any, exceptions or internal inconsistencies are included in the standard† (2002). Rule-based accounting is a set of det ailed rules which must be followed when financial statements are prepared. An example of such system is Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). In US, GAAP is used as a standard framework of guidelines for financial accounting. CPA firms and corporations in US prepare and present their business incomes and expenses, assets and liabilities in their financial statements following GAAP. ... The financial statements are prepared for the users who have reasonable knowledge of business, accounting and economic activities and a willingness to study the financial statements (IASB Framework, Para 25). The users of financial statements are of various types and their needs are different which are required to be catered efficiently because they have to make crucial economic decisions on the basis of financial statements. IFRS requires the financial statements to present a â€Å"true and fair view† of the financial state and economic activities of an entity. When a set of given rules is followed uniformly by all the entities in each financial year, comparability increases. A user may compare an entity’s financial standing with that of another entity or even with that of its own in the preceding years. In order to attain this uniformity, the rules are required to be followed but there are cases where following the rules becomes very difficult. For instance, the IFRS itself admits in the Framework that there is a trade-off between relevance and reliability. One must be forgone to avail the benefit of another. In a given case, preferring relevance over reliability might be useful for specific set of users but might not be useful for another set of users. The Framework has emphasized that the preparer or auditor of financial statements must exercise his professional judgment in such cases so that the information becomes more synchronized with the objectives of IFRS. One of the worst economic crises in history has been faced by the world recently. There are many studies and professional opinions that the fair value system is responsible for it. This system is more

Language as a badge of identity Essay Example for Free

Language as a badge of identity Essay Language is used every day to communicate with one another but beneath that conversation lies another message. The speaker’s use of language gives listeners insight as to who they are, like a badge of identity on their chest. Australian English’s unique phonology and lexicon is recognised globally and distinguishes it from other accents, giving the speaker a clear national identity. Ethno-lects are spoken by a specific group of people who have the same cultural background. These â€Å"ethno-lects† not only help express an individual’s identity and separate themselves from the rest, but also assist in bringing together speakers from similar backgrounds; much like a football jersey. Text speak is constantly evolving as lexemes are taking on new changes. Many teenagers and younger children have begun to adopt this in an attempt to identify with others and fit in. Through language, we can get a glimpse of a person’s identity but they can use the same medium to change that identity as well. Australian English is unlike other Englishes in many different aspects, especially phonetically morphologically and semantically. Phonology plays a great role in national identity as it is what creates different accents. The broad, ocker Australian accent with its trademark nasal, flattened vowels is one of the key elements of Australian linguistics that sets it apart from the rest of the world. Diphthongs in lexemes like â€Å"high† are more rounded, resulting in /hoÉ ª/. Phonetic features such as these are easily identified as Australian. Slang is another feature of Australian English that sets it apart from others. Replacing suffixes with vowels is a good example of this. â€Å"Afternoon† becomes â€Å"arvo†, names like â€Å"Barry† becomes â€Å"Bazza† and by replacing the last element with an ‘-o’, the adjective â€Å"povo† has undergone a word class shift from the noun â€Å"poverty†. Popular culture has also influe nced Australian English, with ABC television series J’amie, Private School girl introducing a semantic and word class shift of ‘quiche’ (a noun meaning a savoury open-faced pastry) to an adjective to describe an attractive individual. Australia’s linguistic innovation displays individuality and opposes claims that slang is borrowed from America.  Australian English shows both national pride and identity. Teenagers are at the age when they are starting to establish their identity. Neologisms are created by teenagers to claim a different identity from that of children or adults. As adults become more familiar with these lexemes and their use, teenagers abandon them or alter the semantics and use to maintain a linguistic barrier. A good example of this is the well-known acronym â€Å"lol† which stands for Laugh Out Loud. As more adults become aware of this lexical item and start to include it in their daily texts, teenagers have brought it into speech as an exclamatory and discourse particle. The case of the letters now also alters the semantics; when typed in lower-case, â€Å"lol† is sarcastic whilst â€Å"LOL† in capital letters shows true amusement. It is evident that this constant changing of terms by teenagers is a sign of rebellion and an effort to keep a linguistic barrier between themselves and adults, thus maintaining a separate identity. The malleability of the lexicon is taken advantage of by teenagers to form a linguistic barrier between themselves and unwanted people such as adults and other teenagers who don’t belong in their group. Thus, a unique identity is maintained. While teenagers are constantly seeking to separate themselves from children and adults, they are also pressured to conform to the teenage group. Acronyms such as â€Å"idek† (I don’t even know) and â€Å"tbh† (to be honest) are now frequently used lexicon in a teenager’s text vocabulary due to connotations of â€Å"cool† and â€Å"modern† being associated with them. Similarly, whatever was once popular amongst a teenager’s discourse. In time, it was shortened to â€Å"whatevs† and this trend spread quickly amongst them as a result of peer pressure and the need to be fashionable. Professor Steven Pinker suggests the reason for this is because â€Å"the coolest kids decide to talk that way and it spreads like wildfire†. Individuals who wish to associate with others who sit higher on the â€Å"social pyramid† will pick up their speech habits and wear it as a new badge of identity. Having their own exclusive vocabulary allows teenagers to relate to each other and share the same identity, giving them a sense of belonging to a group. Language can be worn as a badge of identity, giving speakers national,  interpersonal and intrapersonal identity. The phonology of Australian English gives the speaker a distinct accent and, paired along with its unique slang, makes it identifiable across the globe. In order to separate themselves from adults and children, teenagers build a linguistic barrier by creating neologisms and maintaining that barrier by constantly altering lexicon to avoid adults becoming too familiar with them. On the other hand, inside the teenage group is a drive to conform and use similar language in an attempt to fit in with peers and to have a sense of belonging. Language is used as a badge of identity regardless of what that identity is. Bibliography Das, S, 2005. Struth! Someones nicked me Strine. The Age, 29 January. 34. Seaton, M, 2001. Word Up. Prophet and Tecumseh Essay -- essays research papers

It is believed that Tecumseh was born in 1768 in central Ohio. He was the second son of a Shawnee warrior who was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant. In his dying breaths, his father commanded his eldest son Cheesuaka, to train Tecumseh as a warrior and to never make peace with the whites. Cheesuaka was good to his word and became an excellent warrior and a teacher. He grew close with his younger brother, and after their mother moved to Missouri he acted as a foster parent as well. Tecumseh was a model child, and although it is claimed that he ran in terror from his first battle, his courage never faltered from then on. Tall, muscular, intelligent, and highly charismatic, Tecumseh proved to be a master battle tactics and an excellent speaker. (Edmunds) Prophet was one of a set of triplets born just a few years after Tecumseh. Tenskwatawa, as he was first known was the only one of the three believed to have survived into adulthood. Part of this could be because, unlike Tecumseh, Tenskwatawa was a clumsy child who was unskilled in hunting and would never become a warrior. This was a serious faux paux for a young man in Shawnee society. Tenskwatawa lost his right eye in a hunting accident when he was young. As he grew older, developed a taste for whiskey and quickly degenerated into severe alcoholism. Despite his flaws, Tenskwatawa was devoted to Tecumseh, and the older brother acted as his protector. (Edmunds) Tenskwatawa’s life was filled with alcohol and despair when, he...

Communication Studies: Examples of preface Essay

A poem was chosen to portray this piece because readers seem to be more appreciative of poems. This genre allowed the opportunity to create the perfect setting in which a young girl is enticed into prostitution. I was inspired to do this piece because I wanted to help some of my friends and hope that this genre of the poem will reach them. The intended audience is adolescent girls as they are at high risk of being lured into this practice via media influences that make it seem ‘acceptable’ to indulge in vulgar behaviour and promiscuous acts. An appropriate place for this reflective piece would be in a school newspaper/class notice board, as well as in a school library for easy accessibility. This piece was written in an attempt to sensitize the public of this ever growing epidemic among the young girls of the Caribbean. Example B A dialogue was chosen for this reflective piece because it was the most effective genre to express my thought and feelings about the topic of discussion. It gave the opportunity for my ideas to flow freely. This piece entitled â€Å"Last Resort† discusses one prostitute’s situation and the reasons for her current lifestyle. A dialogue was also chosen to portray this piece as I wished to present at real life scenario that one can easily relate to and understand. The intended audience for this piece is young girls, particularly in their teenage years as they are most susceptible to becoming prostitutes due to poverty and sexual abuse at home. The best place for this piece would be in a teen magazine or newspaper, posted on notice boards at various schools and in the public libraries for wide accessibility. â€Å"Last Resort† intends to sensitize young females in the Caribbean in a dramatic way on the circumstances that may lead to prostitution in an attempt to avoid this lifestyle as much as possible , and hopefully lead to action where precautionary measures may be taken into curb this prevalence.

Profile of Panama for Spanish Students

Introduction: Panama historically has had closer ties with the United States than any country in Latin America other than Mexico. The country is known best, of course, for the Panama Canal, which the United States built for both military and trade purposes at the start of the 20th century. The United States maintained sovereignty over parts of Panama until 1999. Vital Statistics: Panama covers an area of 78,200 square kilometers. It had a population of 3 million at the end of 2003 and a growth rate of 1.36 percent (July 2003 estimate). The life expectancy at birth is 72 years. The literacy rate is about 93 percent. The countrys gross domestic product is about $6,000 per person, and a little more than a third of the people live in poverty. The unemployment rate was 16 percent in 2002. Main industries are the Panama Canal and international banking. Linguistic Highlights: Spanish is the official language. About 14 percent speak a creole form of English, and many residents are bilingual in Spanish and English. About 7 percent speak indigenous languages, the largest of them being Ngà ¤berre. There are also pockets of Arabic and Chinese speakers. Studying Spanish in Panama: Panama has several small language schools, most of them in Panama City. Most of the schools offer home stays, and costs tend to be low. Tourist Attractions: The Panama Canal is on most visitors must-see list, but those coming for extended stays can find a wide variety of destinations. They include beaches on both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Darien National Park and cosmopolitan Panama City. Trivia: Panama was the first Latin American country to adopt the U.S. currency as its own. Technically, the balboa is the official currency, but U.S. bills are used for paper money. Panamanian coins are used, however. History: Before the Spanish arrived, what is now Panama was populated by 500,000 or more people from dozens of groups. The largest group was the Cuna, whose earliest origins are unknown. Other major groups included the Guaymà and the Chocà ³. The first Spaniard in the area was Rodrigo de Bastidas, who explored the Atlantic coast in 1501. Christopher Columbus visited in 1502. Both conquest and disease reduced the indigenous population. In 1821 the area was a province of Colombia when Colombia declared its independence from Spain. Building a canal across Panama had been considered as early as the mid 16th century, and in 1880 the French tried — but the attempt ended in the death of some 22,000 workers from yellow fever and malaria. Panamanian revolutionaries secured Panamas independence from Colombia in 1903 with military support from the United States, which quickly negotiated the rights to build a canal and exercise sovereignty over land on both sides. The U.S. started construction of the canal in 1904 and finished the greatest engineering achievement of its time  in 10 years. Relations between the U.S. and Panama in coming decades were strained, largely due to popular Panamanian bitterness over the prominent role of the U.S. In 1977, despite controversies and political snags in both the U.S. and Panama, the countries negotiated an agreement turning over the canal to Panama at the end of the 20th century. In 1989, U.S. President George H.W. Bush sent U.S. troops to Panama to oust and capture Panamanian President Manuel Noriega. He was forcefully brought to the United States, put on trial for drug trafficking and other crimes, and imprisoned.   The treaty turning over the canal was not fully accepted by many political conservatives in the United States. When a ceremony was held in Panama in 1999 to formally turn over the canal, no senior U.S. officials attended.
